Minisode: The Role of Technology In Endurance Sports
Tuesday Aug 18, 2020
Tuesday Aug 18, 2020
Technology has the ability to make us better athletes and coaches, but only if we apply it properly and use it in the right context. It's a tool just like anything else, and its role in endurance sports is becoming more and more central.
The signs that technology may not be being used as a value add to our athletic identity.
- Using technology purely for external validation.
- Executing training sessions only in the hopes that some data-driven metrics have changed.
- Losing sight of how to properly contextualize data-driven metrics in relation to individual goals and training periodization.
- Not placing the proper importance on qualitative metrics like sleep, stress, and motivation.
- No longer being able to execute a training session based on RPE or "feel".

This was long before we were consumed with a global pandemic, race cancelations, quarantine, and social distancing. In listening to this episode with a different perspective there's so much that's applicable to how athletes navigate the current crisis. Perspective is everything, and now more than ever it's important to "move through the tunnel" on our way to brighter days.
